Case Study
Introduction

LOTUS Learning is an online tutoring platform which uses popular technologies to enhance the learning standards of education in the US. They offer services to low income, credit deficient, foster youth and juvenile detention students. LOTUS offers a wide variety of tutoring programs to help students learn through an interactive platform. When it comes to online learning, LOTUS not only provides the best in industry standards but also provides affordable and accessible learning solutions so that every student can access it from virtually anywhere.

Challenge

LOTUS Learning initially aimed to strengthen students from weaker economic backgrounds and Juvenile Detention Centers who didn't have 24x7 access to the internet. They wanted to create an iOS & Android app which could be used in offline mode.

Among various challenges, our main concern was to build a holistic learning platform, something which conforms to the needs of young students and serves its purpose. Another interesting functionality was to set up a live tutoring conference session for students when they got stuck somewhere while working on their learning plans.

UX process we followed

Quovantis team arranged for some quick kick-off meetings where we discussed elaborately on the requirements. Our ideation phase resulted in gathering the right information and user personas. We brainstormed the layout and navigation and presented to LOTUS for further improvements. Through many iterations and increase in the scope of use cases, we continued to make enhancements and work towards creating better user experience.

Visual design approach

Every element in our design screens has gone through a lot of research and thought. The whole workflow is designed to ease out the process for students of every grade. The typography, font weights, themes, and colors- everything is present for a reason. Here is a glimpse of our work-

Technology stack

LOTUS partnered with Quovantis to solve this problem by creating an Android app, which can be used in offline as well as in online mode. So if a student does not have access to internet connection, then the lesson plans are downloaded for offline use. The students can also use the browser to work on their lessons, using a web application which is built using AngularJS. The teachers use a Web app to administer the platform which is built using open source Java, Spring, and Hibernate. The backend platform runs on the popular Amazon Web Services.

Iterative development with scrum

Over a period of ten weeks, the Quovantis team asked themselves several questions: What are we trying to achieve? What are we making the platform for? What would we want if we were the users? Every Sprint was monitored, every retrospective gave way to new improvements. We transparently shared our every progress with the client. We worked with utmost empathy towards our end users i.e. Students and delivered an iOS app by the end of ten weeks which was also deployed in one of the partner schools of LOTUS.

Final outcome

With the successful timely launch of mobile and web app, LOTUS team was able to build collaboration with partner districts such as Los Angeles County Office of Education and Central Unified School District.

"Quovantis team thoroughly understood our needs and designed the application to ensure that the best quality is being given to our subscribers. The team is very attentive to details and these guys know what they are doing. They have made it easy for us to provide high-quality services to our customers." said Sunpreet Narang, Director Education, LOTUS Learning.
