An Overview

Are you dreaming? Or, are you Lucid Dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is a dream where you’re aware of everything you see and experience. In fact, a person can also control what happens in the dream. This typically happens during REM sleep, one of the dream-stages.

Lucid dreaming needs a lot of practice and discipline. One has to perform steps like recognizing dream signs, doing reality checks, keeping a dream journal, and so on. Our partners wanted to build a mobile app that helps people practice it with ease. Their vision is to help people become more aware of their dreams and enhance their potential by learning to practice it in the right way.

We are not “Solving a Problem”. We are unlocking a new world. We want people to explore their full potential. Whether one is a creative professional looking for novel experiences, or an executive looking for enhanced creative mental states, this could potentially change the way we look at problems.

The Solution

Designed for every lucid dreamer persona

The targeted audience of our app is either pro-lucid dreamers or beginners who are new to the realm of lucid dreaming. So, the user experience is designed to make it easy for every user persona.

  • The onboarding flow is simple and intuitive. Users can login using their Google account and navigate through the app easily.
  • Each task is divided into modular steps that helps users move faster, without getting overwhelmed by information overload.
  • The use of sans-serif font is by choice to improve readability and clarity. Since the users will be using the app at all times- during the daytime as well as night, we didn't want them to lose their attention to curvy font styles.
  • The buttons and cards are ergonomically placed so that it's easier for the user to tap and swipe without using the other hand.
  • We’ve designed the app keeping in mind the environment in which end users will use the application. Therefore, we’ve designed multiple ways (voice, text and sketch) to record and maintain a dream journal.
our approach

Adding delight with little details

We had extensive discussions with our partners who are experts Neuroscientists, seasoned business executives, and life-long lucid dreamers. They guided us on the ideal number of times a user should do a reality check, or how many hours a user should sleep in order to lucid dream. So we designed a subtle visual indicator that turns red when the user has entered an inappropriate input.

There were numerous other challenges that we faced while visualizing the experience of the app. Most of them were related to understanding the nuances of lucid dreaming and how to implement them digitally for our users. For example— use of color psychology was a key ingredient in some of our illustrations. We derived our palette from human chakras to relate to our subconscious mind.

Apart from that, one of the features of the app asks users to record their dreams in a dream journal. This can happen even during the middle of the night when they might wake up abruptly. To ease their interaction, we decided to keep a dark-theme for the app.

development

Coding the experience

Since we were developing the MVP of this app, we followed the iterative and incremental development process to roll out this project. We worked in 1 week design and development sprints.

In our design sprints, as we progressed from paper wireframes to prototypes, we also started working on the visual design. Meanwhile, we took feedback from all stakeholders and kept optimizing the controls and interactions of the app.

In development sprints, our mobile team worked on the iOS platform to build this app. The backend is built in Firebase. We built the whole app from ground-up in just 7 weeks.

the outcome

An experience worth experiencing

Lucid Reality is an award-winning app that won hearts at India’s Best Design Awards-2019 and MUX awards- 2019 in the mobile design category. The app has also received ravishing reviews from Stanford's Sleep and Dream class where the founder of Lucid Reality teaches.

award

Quovantis developed an aesthetically impressive app that's helped the company stand out in the App Store. Their designs are not only unique and highly professional, but also well-researched and thought-out. Their team went the extra mile to exceed expectations and was great to work with overall.
